FAQ: B•A•T SCARAB: Minimal Multi-tool Coin
For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Kickstarter!

Do you have a warranty?

Yes. We guarantee each B.A.T. SCARAB for 2 years from material and manufacturing defects. This does not cover the scuffing, scratching or wear and tear associated with using a tool like the B.A.T. If you have any questions about this, you can email us here ([email protected]) at any time. If you try to take it on a US domestic flight and TSA confiscates your B.A.T. SCARAB, we will replace it or refund it (one time, at our discretion) free of charge if we determine that you made a good faith effort to abide by regulations, e.g. you didn’t do anything inappropriate which led to the confiscation. If you find yourself in this situation, ask them for documentation of the confiscation.

Do you have a disclaimer?

Yes. By purchasing this product you absolve Covert Products Group (CPG), its owners, manufacturers, etc. from any responsibility for how you utilize or carry this product, and any consequences that stem from its use or carry. For example, if it cuts a hole in your pocket, it’s on you, not us.

What is it made of?

400-series hardened and tempered Stainless Steel. Many knives are made from this type of steel (you surely own at least one) since it is corrosion-resistant and easy to maintain. It works great for tools like the B.A.T. SCARAB.

Why not titanium?

Don’t you mean… why not Titanium yet? Perhaps in the future.

How much does it weigh?

0.35 ounces or 10 grams.

Where is it made?

The B.A.T. SCARAB is made in China by a Taiwan-based company. Design and inspection are in the US (by me).

Why isn’t it made in the US?

We tried to have this made in the US - we really, truly did - but there were no American factories that were willing to take on the project. We were in contact with over 40 manufacturers large, small and local. Even one thousand pieces is considered by many to be a very small order, and therefore at a very high cost. As cool as the B.A.T. SCARAB is, the price would be at least $50 each if we made it in the US.

Do magnets attach to it?

Yes.

Will it make a hole in my pocket?

Not likely. I’ve carried some version of this in pockets for about a year without issues. If it makes you nervous, you can carry it with the o-ring across the sharp edge, but I wouldn’t be worried about it.

What can I cut with it?

String, threads and tape. It is very sharp, but not designed to be a seatbelt cutter based on the overall shape.

Can I really take it on a plane?

In the US at the time of this writing, yes. We have flown and passed through high security checkpoints multiple times without even a question during the past 2 years of testing. I have personally put it through x-rays at the airport at least 12 times in both a SCOTTeVEST pocket with a few coins and in a pocket in my backpack. I have never even been questioned about it. Nothing about the design violates any of their current rules.

That said, rules can change and those are not always announced. TSA agents have the discretion to exercise their judgment when it comes to security and safety. Outside the US, security requirements can be very different, and when visiting other elevated security areas aka non-permissive environments - like courthouses - the rules get even fuzzier.

Use your common sense. The B.A.T. SCARAB can in no way be considered a weapon, but even items classified as tools may be restricted in certain environments.

If you try to take it on a US domestic flight and TSA confiscates your B.A.T., we will replace it or refund it (one time, at our discretion) free of charge if we determine that you made a good faith effort to abide by regulations, e.g. you didn’t do anything inappropriate which led to the confiscation. We can’t monitor all global travel rules, so for all travel outside the US, the responsibility rests solely on the user (that’s you).

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
